Here are some of the condiment options we’ve come up. Thanks to those of you who have submitted suggestions! Keep them coming!
Vinegars:
Organic apple cider vinegar is available at Pfennings in St. Agatha.
Delicious red and white wine vinegars from Niagara Vinegar can be found in Guelph at Oudekirk and Taylor at 3 Wyndam St. North. Bailey’s Local Foods carries Pristine Gourmet wine vinegars.
Oils:
FlorAlp’s organic, cold pressed sunflower oil is available from Pfennings, Seven Shores and Eating Well Organically.
Bailey’s also has local canola and soy oils.
Other:
Local honey is available at both markets. Maple syrup, of course, is readily available too!
You can also get peanut butter from Oakridge Acres or order it from Bailey’s.
Marc Sargent, one of our participants, posted this recipe for ketchup.
My husband made mayo with this recipe, using Sunflower oil and apple cider vinegar. It’s quite strong. In our opinions it is best left off our burgers and sausages, and should be saved for mixing into things – it was a great addition to our potato salad. Now that we have discovered soy and canola, we might be making another batch.
Check out Gmach produce at the Kitchener Market. They have mustards, sauerkraut, relishes and all sorts of other preserves. The main ingredients are all local, but they do add small amounts of non-local vinegars or other additives. You can check out the 99% rule and make your call on whether or not you want to include them. As an aside – they also have fabulous non-sprayed produce.
Have you discovered anything else that we should know about? Please do keep us posted. Happy Eating!
